The platform outside the Heritage Centre overlooks the River Goyt and the Torrs gorge and
gives a view of Torr Vale Mill, a cotton spinning and weaving mill which closed at the
end of 2000. Details of the mill are shown on the adjacent information board, but it
should be noted that building No. 3, the weaving shed, no longer exists: it was burnt
down in the summer of 2001. Below, can be seen a weir in the middle of the river and
part of the Millennium Walkway. These are described at locations 2 and 3. On the right,
the railway from Manchester runs through New Mills Central station and then through a
tunnel under the bus station on its way to Chinley and Sheffield.
